Disputes Tribunalup to $30,000
In New Zealand, the Disputes Tribunal is a low-cost, no-lawyer tribunal that hears civil disputes up to $30,000 (or higher by agreement). A referee (not a judge) mediates first and, if needed, issues a binding decision. The filing fee starts at NZ$59.
Before filing, send a letter of demand and try to negotiate. Consumer disputes are also handled free by the Commerce Commission or industry ombudsmen (Banking, Telecommunications, Utilities). Community Law Centres offer free legal help.
