Small Claims Court (Magistrate)

In Nigeria, many states now have a Small Claims Court under the Magistrate Court, designed to resolve simple monetary disputes within 60 days. You must first serve a letter of demand giving at least seven days to pay before filing.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) handles consumer complaints free of charge. Larger civil matters go to the Magistrate or State High Court; Legal Aid Council provides representation to those who cannot afford lawyers.

Typical steps
  1. 1Serve a letter of demand giving at least 7 days
  2. 2File a claim in the Small Claims Court (state-dependent)
  3. 3Complain to the FCCPC for consumer disputes
  4. 4Approach Legal Aid Council if needed
