Small Claims Track (County Court)up to £10,000
In the UK, the pre-action protocols expect you to write a clear letter before claim setting out what is owed and giving a reasonable deadline (usually 14–30 days). Most money disputes up to £10,000 are handled by the small claims track of the County Court, which is designed to be used without a solicitor and is filed online via Money Claim Online.
For consumer disputes, sector ombudsman schemes (Financial Ombudsman Service, Energy Ombudsman, Communications Ombudsman) are free and binding on the company. ACAS handles workplace disputes; Citizens Advice provides free guidance.
Typical steps
- 1Send a letter before claim with a clear deadline
- 2Try an ombudsman scheme for regulated sectors
- 3File a claim on Money Claim Online (up to £10,000)
- 4Get free guidance from Citizens Advice
